A kaduna based non governmental organisation Small Home Farmers Development Initiatives, has launched a training programme for over 900 women in home crops production with a view to combating deficits and high cost

Hajiya Hajara Yusuf Dantso who is the Chief Executive of the organisation explained this while speaking on the objective of the training organised for women engaged in Small Home Farming with the aim to enhancing food security.

She explained that she initiated the group in response to food scarcity and high commodity prices, recognizing the necessity for women to support themselves.

She assembled a team of farming professionals to facilitate both theoretical and practical sessions on sustainable farming practices.

The training focused on planting potatoes, yam, and vegetables at home, preparing soil mixtures for various crops, and creating home made insecticides.

Trainees received free seeds, including spinach, moringa, tomato, and okra, to start their own home gardens.

Dantso emphasized that home gardens can minimize space use and enhance security as farming occurs within home premises.

She noted that home-style gardening empowers communities by bringing agriculture into homes.

The first batch of trainees consisted of 200 women, with more expected in subsequent batches.

The initiative has garnered interest from additional women, prompting the organization to continue accommodating new participants.

Krestnews reports that last year, the NGO also empowered women through fish farming training, distributing fish juveniles for rearing adding that Plans are underway for another fish farming training soon.

Dantso called on the government to support these initiatives by facilitating trainee recruitment while the NGO offers free training, a nominal fee applies to those who wish to join independently.

“Certificates in agriculture and various farming aspects will be issued as the programmes progresses.” she said.

She also urged men to support their wives in this endeavor to benefit their families.
