The 2025 Niger State Under-Age Badminton Mini Tournament delivered pure excitement over the weekend in Minna, as young athletes from three local government areas thrilled fans with electrifying performances, dramatic comebacks and unexpected upsets.
Across the two-day championship, spectators witnessed intense rallies, powerful smashes and the unwavering resilience of the junior competitors—each determined to make their mark as future stars of the sport.
One of the biggest shocks of the finals was the dethroning of Niger State’s top-ranked junior player, Usman Ahmed, who fell to the tournament’s standout performer, Miracle Godwin. Godwin, previously ranked No.2, battled through the final match with exceptional speed, discipline and technical mastery, claiming both the Best Player and No.1 ranking in the state.
Chairman of the Niger State Badminton Association, Alhaji Nma Kolo, praised the players for their spirit and performance, emphasizing the importance of sustained support for young talents.
“This mini tournament is aimed at catching them young in rural communities and helping them build the capacity to become future national and international champions. Although only three LGAs participated this year, I assure you that all 25 local governments will join the next edition.”
Head Coach of the State Badminton Association, Ismail Mohammed, described the event as a successful grassroots development programme targeting under-15 boys and girls from Minna, Bida and Kontagora.
“Honestly, I expected an easier tournament, but these players came ready to fight. It was a shock to see the No.1 lose and the No.2 take the championship. Their hard work truly showed.”
Coach Mohammed also commended Chairman Kolo for his unwavering support.
“He provides rackets, shoes, sometimes pays school fees and even covers transportation. His support is a major reason these kids are improving so fast.” For more stories, follow www.krestnews.com
