Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to partnering with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to combat substance abuse across the state.
Governor Mutfwang, in a statement issued by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, stated this on Thursday during a courtesy visit to the Chairman/Chief Executive of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Muhammad Buba Marwa (Rtd), at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.
He commended Gen. Marwa for the significant efforts in tackling substance abuse nationwide, praising his resilience and dedication to ridding the country of drug-related issues.
Governor Mutfwang also acknowledged the support his administration has received from the agency in its efforts to curb the menace in Plateau State and called for greater synergy in order to further stem the tide of what he called the “killer disease.”
Governor Mutfwang emphasized the critical role of the NDLEA’s mandate in ensuring the well-being of families across the state, noting that nearly every home has been affected by the scourge of drug abuse—a phenomenon that has become a national crisis.
“We have closely observed your performance, and it is clear that since you took over, the NDLEA has executed its duties with greater vigor and determination. Many who profit from the illicit drug trade have found it increasingly difficult to operate since your arrival,” said the Governor. “On the Plateau, we are genuinely concerned about the impact of substance abuse and illegal drug trafficking on our people, and we are here to explore better ways of collaboration.”
Governor Mutfwang called for enhanced collaboration at all levels, urging a focus on leveraging intelligence networks beyond the conventional roadblocks to trace the origins and transportation routes of illegal substances entering the country.
In response, Brig. Gen. Marwa commended Governor Mutfwang for implementing people-oriented programs that have positively impacted the lives of Plateau citizens. He also praised the Governor’s courage and maturity in handling security issues in the state and assured him of the agency’s commitment to achieving lasting peace and a drug-free Plateau.
Gen. Marwa stressed that the fight against illicit drugs must be all-encompassing for the country to overcome this life-threatening challenge. He noted that Plateau State is a gateway to the North-West and emphasized the need for a fierce battle against both suppliers and consumers of illegal substances.
He also revealed that the agency is taking steps to build barracks across the 36 states for its personnel, as drug addicts often turn against officers after being released on bail. The project, he explained, will commence in the six geopolitical zones.
Meanwhile, Governor Mutfwang also paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Doris Anite, where strategic discussions were held on revitalizing small-scale businesses in Plateau State for the benefit of all citizens.
