Plateau Government taken a bold step to address challenges inherent in the development mining in the state with the Governor Caleb Mutfwang issuing an executive order 001 of 2025.
The order suspends all illegal mining activities across-the-board the state, aiming to protect the environment, address security challenges, and safeguard citizens’ well-being.
This was disclosed by the State commissioner for Environment Peter Gwom on behalf of the chairman of the committee who is also the Attorney General of the state, Philmon Dafi, said the suspension of mining activities is necessary to restore sanity in the sector.
He explained that a Technical Committee on Mining Reform which has been inaugurated is to develop a framework ensuring mining activities align with the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act, 2007, and Mining Regulations 2011.
The committee re- assured citizens that the temporary suspension on mining in the state is a necessary step towards a better future.

The committee urged traditional institutions, community leaders, and licensed miners to support the temporary suspension. Local Government Chairmen are also encouraged to collaborate in sensitizing citizens on the importance of legal mining.
They were also quick to caution against politicizing the issue, emphasizing it is a strategic move to sanitize the mining sector.
The committee urged all stakeholders to collaborate with the state government to see through these mining reforms.
