Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has reaffirmed the State government’s commitment to regulating the mining sector as he announced the clearance of 150 mining operators.

Speaking at a press conference, Governor Mutfwang stated that the decision was not made lightly and it was not aimed at hurting the industrious citizens, but to bring about reforms, enhance security, and restore human dignity to communities.

Governor Mutfwang highlighted that the decision followed growing concerns over the negative impacts of unregulated mining, including the exploitation of young people, drug abuse, and environmental degradation. Adding that
the ban on all unapproved mining activities in the State still stands.

In an address marking five months since the signing of Executive Order 001 of 2025 which temporarily suspended mining activities in the State, the Governor said the order was a necessary intervention aimed at restoring order, safeguarding communities, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the sector.

He explained that any operator or individual who has not been cleared by the Committee must stay away from all mining sites.

He also noted that very soon, government will initiate the process of formalizing artisanal miners into cooperatives.

Mutfwang however added that the step will secure the supply chain to the already cleared Tin Sheds and Buying Centers and ensure better oversight and compliance.

Our correspondent reports that the Governor also warned that any Buying Center found purchasing minerals from unauthorized sources, particularly from underage miners, will face immediate arrest and prosecution.

He called on all parents and guardians to take full responsibility for their children. Any underage child found at a mining site, instead of being in school, will be arrested along with their parents or guardian and sanctioned accordingly. (www.krestnews.com).
