Krestnews.com reports that Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University Lapai (IBBUL) in central Nigeria has commenced the planting of 68,000 trees across 50 hectares of land within the University as part of the green economy initiatives of the university.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Abu Kasim Adamu stated this at the flag-off of the tree planting project in Lapai on Monday, September 23.
He explained that the University is partnering with UNICEF towards curbing adverse impact of climate change through tree planting.
“I want to specially recognised UNICEF’s admiration for the University’s eco-friendly environment, which further inspired the partnership to create a sustainable green campus”, he stated.
“The project, which involves the planting of 68,000 seedlings across 50 hectares of land within the University, is expected to support IBBU’s vision of becoming a leader in green economy initiatives”, he elsborates.
According to him, climate change is one of the greatest threats facing humanity today which underscores the urgency of mitigation and adaptation measures to safeguard the environment.
In a remark the state Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Yakubu Mohammed Kolo reaffirmed government commitment towards enhancing the green environment initiatives aimed at combating climate change in Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai.
Represented by the Director, Forestry and Wildlife, Dr. Musa Labaran, the Commissioner commended the Management the University for its collaboration with UNICEF on the tree-planting project.
