The National Examinations Council (NECO) has expanded its continental footprint with the successful accreditation of schools in Burkina Faso to conduct the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) and Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
This milestone was confirmed in a weekend statement by the Acting Director, Information and Public Relations of NECO, Azeez Sani.
Sani disclosed that a NECO accreditation team had visited several schools in Burkina Faso to assess their preparedness for the examinations. The team evaluated classrooms, science and computer laboratories, libraries, workshops, examination halls, sports facilities, continuous assessment records, teacher adequacy, and overall security standards.
Following a thorough and comprehensive review, the schools were granted full accreditation to host both SSCE and BECE.
He noted that the landmark approval “is a testament to NECO’s commitment to delivering quality education and reliable assessment services beyond Nigeria’s borders. With its expanding global presence, NECO is steadily positioning itself as a leading African examination body, providing opportunities for Nigerian students and foreign nationals alike.”
Sani also recalled that NECO recently established an examination centre in London, adding to existing centres in Togo, Benin Republic, Niger Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Côte d’Ivoire, and Saudi Arabia.
Nigeria’s Ambassador to Burkina Faso, Ambassador M.D. Galadima, commended NECO during a courtesy visit by the accreditation team to the Nigerian Embassy in Ouagadougou. He revealed that Nigerian families in Burkina Faso had long faced challenges due to differences in educational systems and the scarcity of English-based schools.
“Previously, parents had to travel as far as Saki in Oyo State for registration and examinations—exposing students to security risks and placing financial pressure on families,” Galadima said.
