Nasarawa State Statistician General Dr. Ahmed Ibrahim attended the 2nd session of the Bi-annual meeting of the National Consultative Committee of Statistics in Asaba, Delta State. The meeting focused on enhancing data integration and interoperability within the Nigerian statistical system.

Dr. Ahmed Ibrahim is one of the 36 Statistician Generals in the country who attended the meeting. The theme of this year’s meeting is enhancing data integration and interoperability within the Nigerian statistical system. The significance of the meeting is to share statistical general knowledge, expertise, and experience that will help to revolutionize the way data is gathered, synthesized, shared, and accessed.

Speaking at the opening session, the Statistician General of the Federation and Chief Executive Officer, National Bureau of Statistics, Prince Adeyemi Adeniran, said the meeting will deliberate in detail on two activities: the Integrated System of Administrative Statistics (ISAS) and the State Domestic Product (SGDP).

According to Prince Adeniran, the operation of the two projects holds significant prospects for the statistical system. ISAS uses technology to facilitate seamless collection, validation, analysis, and reporting of administrative data straight from the source.

Prince Adeniran emphasized that administrative data is the largest source of statistical information compared to surveys. Therefore, it is imperative to continue enhancing the system to make it fit for future needs.

The Statistician General reminded the participants of their crucial responsibility in measuring and reporting on the social-economic activities of their society as producers of official statistics. He urged states yet to pass statistics laws and establish agencies with their own budgets to do so to establish their Bureau for public development.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Delta State Commissioner for Economic Planning, Mr. Sonny Akporokiamo Ekedayen, welcomed the participants and said that Delta State accords statisticians and accurate data for planning a pride of place. He explained that statisticians help provide insights into the needs of the people, how and where to deploy resources, trend analysis for greater impact, and measurement of performance.

The Commissioner highlighted the achievements and ongoing initiatives by the Department of Statistics in the state, including the publication of the 2024 Delta Market Calendar, completion of the 2024 Road Traffic Survey, and the 2024 Delta Yearbook. He disclosed that the Statistics Department has computed the
2021 and 2022 Delta State Gross Domestic Product (GDP) with the latest figure of 4.6 trillion.
