The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has threatened to impound vehicles carrying people with goods as part of the effort to reduce road crashes in Nasarawa State.

Corps Commander Lucia Samuel-Mhii, Nasarawa State Sector Commander of FRSC stated this during a mega rally to sensitise drivers and other road users on Thursday in Lafia.

The mega rally held at the Lafia Bus Terminal with drivers, motorcyclists, representatives of sister security agencies as well as National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) members among others.

She said that the command would to set up joint taskforce in collaboration with sister agencies to conduct special operations to end the practice.

“It is necessary to collaborate with the Nasarawa State Government, traditional rulers as well as sister agencies like the police, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Army, and Vehicle Inspection Officers to curb the menace,” the FRSC boss added.

The sector commander explained that vehicles were designed for special purposes and users should used them accordingly to avoid increasing crashes.

She explained that the rate of road crashes on the highways is unacceptable and efforts must be made to reduce it to minimum.

She said human factors such as overspeedy, overloading, dangerous overtaking, drinking and driving, bad state of vehicles among others often lead to avoidable accidents and loss of lives and property.

Samuel-Mhii also called on vehicles owners and motorcyclists to register for papers and driving license from appropriate authorities.

She therefore waned those using fake number plates to desist and register for authentic number plates to avoid being sanction.

On his part, Usman Zanuwa, Lafia Branch Chairman of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) lauded FRSC for the sensitisation aimed at educating their members.

He also called on drivers to adhere strictly to the traffic rules and avoid act capable of causing crashes.

He also promised to support the new sector commander in her effort to ensure safer highways.

The event was attended by Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Security and Civil Defense, Vehicle Inspectors Officers among others. (NAN).
