Jos, Nigeria – Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to making agriculture the backbone of the state’s economy, announcing major reforms and new initiatives to boost the sector.

Speaking during an interactive session with journalists at the Little Rayfield Government House, Jos, the governor revealed that the Ministry of Agriculture has been restructured into two separate entities — Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Livestock Development — to enhance efficiency and sectoral focus.

To stabilize market activities and improve food supply, Mutfwang said his government, in partnership with the World Bank’s RAM project, has established major markets in Jingir, Mangu, and Shendam, with neighborhood markets like the one in Bukuru to be replicated across more communities.

He highlighted the Plateau Potato Value Chain as a priority, noting that the crop has now been branded as Plateau Potato. Plans are underway, he said, to establish a tissue culture laboratory in collaboration with the African Development Bank to boost production and quality.

On livestock development, the governor disclosed that the Jos abattoir will soon be revived to handle the slaughtering of 500 cows daily, ensuring both increased meat production and improved hygiene standards. He also noted ongoing collaboration with the Federal Government to revitalize the livestock sector.

Governor Mutfwang further stated that his administration is driving significant improvements in healthcare and hospitality, which are already experiencing a major turnaround.

The state Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ayuku Pwaspo, thanked the governor for engaging with the media and pledged continued support through effective reportage.

Also present were Commissioner for Information Joyce Ramnap, other commissioners, media heads, and the Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, who all commended the governor for fostering a strong media-government relationship.Visit www.krestnews.com for more reports and news.
