Lindii Peace Foundation (LPF), an NGO based in Maiduguri, Borno State, joined global partners to commemorate the 2025 World Breastfeeding Week from August 1 to 7, reaffirming its commitment to breastfeeding and nutrition security in Nigeria.

This year’s theme, “Prioritize Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems,” calls for stronger structures to support mothers from pregnancy through the first two years of a child’s life.

Citing UNICEF’s data that 60% of infants are deprived of essential breastmilk in their first six months, LPF emphasized the urgent need for a consistent and inclusive support chain — spanning homes, health facilities, workplaces, and IDP camps — to promote and sustain breastfeeding practices.

LPF highlighted several life-saving and long-term benefits of breastfeeding:

● Reduces the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)

● Lowers childhood obesity risks,

● Promotes bonding between mother and child,

●Acts as a natural contraceptive

●Reduces postpartum bleeding and restores uterine size

● Boosts baby’s immunity, especially through colostrumCost-effective, eco-friendly, hygienic, and safeSupports healthy gut bacteria development

●May enhance intelligence and learning capacity in babies

As the foundation advocates for a “warm chain” of breastfeeding support, it calls on healthcare workers, community leaders, employers, and humanitarian actors to create enabling environments that empower every mother to breastfeed successfully. For more updates, visit www.krestnews.com
