Lafia Local Government football team on Tuesday defeated their Nassarawa-Eggon counterpart 1:0 in the opening match of the governorship football competition at the Lafia City stadium.
Mamuda Mohammed of Lafia FC scored the only goal of the game at 50th minutes to defeat the Nassarawa-Eggon team who mounted pressure, but could not convert any to the chances.
The competition is organised by Nasarawa State Football Association in collaboration with the state government.
Speaking at the end of the match, Gov. Abdullahi Sule said that he had seen a lot of raw talents from the two teams at the opening match.
The governor added that the state would select and promote telented and skillful players as the competition progresses.
Sule explained that the competition was part of effort of his administration to develop grassroot football and would be replicated in other sports.
He further said the government would upgrade facilities at the Lafia Township Stadium and construct additional three mini stadium across the state to promote sporting activities.

“We will continue to invest in sports because it is now a very big business and we want some of them here to play for our state teams and national teams as well as foreign clubs,” he added.
Also speaking, Salisu Galadima, Nasarawa State FA Chairman appreciated the corporation they have received so far from the various teams.
He promised that the FA would invites coaches of football clubs to come for the finals to watch them with a view of selecting the best for further development. (NAN)
