Mohammed Haliru, Chairman of Lafia Local Government Area (LGA), has pledged to partner with the Nasarawa State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) to promote effective reportage of grassroots development.

The LGA chairman stated this while playing host to the State Executive Council members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on Friday in Lafia.

The NUJ team was led by its Chairman, Mr Salihu Mohammed-Alkali of Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Precious FM Lafia.

Haliru explained that the importance of journalists in the development of any nation cannot be overemphasized.

He added that the partnership would help to bridge the information gap between the local government and the public.

Haliru emphasieed the importance of accurate and timely reporting in showcasing the achievements and challenges of the local government.

He pledged to provide journalists with unfettered access to information to ensure that the public is well-informed about development projects and initiatives of the council.

He told the team that he was already able to initiate programs and projects that had impacted the lives of the people of the area.

“I have paid the JAMB registration fee to 1000 students across the 13 electoral wards in the area and paid WASSC to many others.

“Distributed palliative to vulnerable groups, repaired broken-down vehicles, and ensured prompt payment of salaries, among other welfare issues,” he added.

The LG boss also promised to support the union where necessary to enable them to carry out their responsibility without hindrance and improve the welfare of members.

Earlier, the NUJ Chairman congratulated the Lafia council chairman on his election and what he has been able to do since its inception.

Mohammed-Alkali said that the union was willing to partner with the council chairman to ensure effective reportage of grassroots development.

He assured Haliru that journalists would maintain their professionalism and objectivity in reporting the activities of the local government. (www.krestnews.com).
