The Plateau Multi-Door Courthouse (PMDC) has sought for a collaborative partnership with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) to sensitize the Plateau public on the need to explore Alternative Dispute Resolution.
Speaking on the initiative during a courtesy visit the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ in Jos, the Chairman of PMDC, Justice Chrysanthus Senlong (rtd) emphasized the importance of proactive measures in resolving conflicts and reducing the backlog of cases in the formal court system.
He explained that the PMDC was established in 2019 as a forum for resolving disputes outside the traditional court system which aims at easing the burden on the judiciary while providing more efficient and accessible avenues for resolving conflicts.
Senlong reiterated that through this collaboration, the PMDC and NUJ intend to raise awareness about the benefits of ADR methods such as mediation, arbitration, and negotiation.
This, he further explained, can be by leveraging the reach and influence of the media, to educate the public on the advantages of ADR, including its cost-effectiveness, confidentiality, and quicker resolution of disputes.
“Collaborating with the NUJ allows us to reach a wider audience and dispel misconceptions surrounding ADR, ultimately fostering a culture of peaceful dispute resolution. ADR is an internationally recognized independent body, though sponsored by the government. Here in Plateau, it was inaugurated in 2019 it commenced it activities this year.
We have 48 neutrals that are trained in Alternative Dispute Resolution for easy dispensation of justice”; Senlong said.
The State Chairman of NUJ, Ayuku Pwaspo expressed the union’s commitment to leveraging its platform for public enlightenment and advocacy to advance this cause.
“As journalists, it is our duty to inform and educate the public on matters of societal importance. Partnering with the PMDC aligns with our mission to promote transparency and access to justice,” Pwaspo said.
She assured PMDC of adequate collaboration and support to ensure that their planned activities were achieved at the appropriately.
Our correspondent reports that the collaboration between the PMDC and NUJ is expected to involve various outreach activities, including seminars, workshops, and media campaigns aimed at demystifying ADR processes and encouraging their adoption.
This strategic plan is by empowering individuals and communities with knowledge about alternative avenues for dispute resolution, the initiative seeks to contribute to a more harmonious and equitable society on the Plateau.
As stakeholders continue to explore innovative approaches to address the challenges within the justice system, initiatives like this collaboration between the PMDC and NUJ serve as promising steps towards building a more responsive and inclusive legal framework.
