The Nasarawa State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to grassroots sports development as the 9th edition of the ACP Yakubu Agabi Mailafia Peace and Unity Football Tournament kicked off in Daddere, Obi Local Government Area.
Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Kwanta Yakubu, made this known during the opening ceremony, emphasizing government’s continued support for initiatives that promote peace, unity, and youth empowerment through sports.
The competition, which features 32 teams drawn from two senatorial districts, will engage over 400 local players and technical crew competing for glory over a three-month period.
The opening match saw Greater Tomorrow FC of Lafia begin their campaign on a bright note, defeating defending champions Thunder FC of Agyaragu 2–1 in an entertaining encounter. The fast-paced game kept fans on their feet, with Greater Tomorrow taking the early lead. Thunder FC capitalized on a defensive error to equalize before Greater Tomorrow sealed victory with a late winner.
Commending the sponsor, ACP Yakubu Agabi Mailafia, Commissioner Yakubu urged the management of Nasarawa United FC to scout for promising players from the tournament. He assured that the state government remains committed to supporting such laudable grassroots initiatives.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Lands and Urban Development, Barr. David Sule Moyi, echoed the importance of sports in fostering unity and youth development.
Stakeholders including Sangarin Shabu, Umar Mamud Bwalla, Chairman of the Competition Committee, Mohammed Dan Azumi, and the Sole Administrator of Daddere commended ACP Mailafia for his sustained efforts in promoting peace and unity through football.

In his remarks, ACP Yakubu Agabi Mailafia said the tournament was conceived as a platform to discover budding talents, promote social cohesion, and build the confidence and resilience of young people.
