Nasarawa State Surveyor-General, Surveyor Ishaya Makama, was among the distinguished surveyors and industry leaders that attended the 2024 Northern Surveyors Forum (NSF) Annual General Meeting, AGM, which also featured J.D.J Dashe memorial lecture in Kaduna.

The meeting brought together experts in the survey profession and industry leaders to explore innovative solutions for national development.

As the Surveyor-General of Nasarawa State, Surv. Makama plays a crucial role in shaping the state’s survey landscape.

His participation in the NSF forum highlights the importance of collaboration and knowledge-sharing among survey professionals in driving national growth and development.

Speakers at the event emphasized the importance of digital mapping in addressing Nigeria’s insecurity challenges.

Ayo Medula, Chief Exercise Officer at Imdept Engineering Limited, expressed concern over the lack of a proper mapping system across the country. He highlighted the crucial role surveyors play in combating insecurity and driving economic growth.

According to Medula, digital maps provide vital information for tracking crime and building infrastructure. He cited the recent vandalism of power transmission lines, which caused a blackout, as an example of how accurate data could have prevented such incidents.
Medula also stressed that proper mapping can aid law enforcement in remote areas and reduce land disputes.

Registrar of the Surveyors Council of Nigeria, Surv. Kunle Olugbemiro, urged the government to prioritize recruiting and empowering surveyors to meet the country’s development needs. Chairman of the Northern Surveyor Forum, Dr. Isa Funtua Abdulkadir, highlighted the advancements in the field, including the use of geospatial technology for security and the launch of a professional journal to promote best practices.
Surv. Kunle Olugbemiro, the Registrar of the Surveyors Council of Nigeria, stressed the importance of the government focusing on the recruitment and empowerment of surveyors to address the country’s development requirements.

Dr. Isa Funtua Abdulkadir, Chairman of the Northern Surveyor Forum, emphasized the progress in the industry, such as leveraging geospatial technology for security purposes and introducing a professional journal to advocate for best practices.

The meeting also appealed to other northern state governments that are yet to upgrade their offices of the Surveyor General to Extra Ministerial Status are to do so without delay for the development of the region.
