Experts in the livestock industry have called for the adoption of modern livestock production to improve efficiency, productivity, and food security.

The experts made the at the 50th Annual Conference of the Nigerian Society of Animal Production (NSAP) on Monday in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

The theme of the conference, ‘Exploring transformations in Animal Agriculture for food security, wealth creation, and economic growth,’ was apt.

He added that the theme underscored the urgent need for innovation, collaboration, and strategic planning to make animal agriculture a measure contributor to the country’s economy.

The 50th annual conference of NSAP, which was held at the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), was organized in collaboration with the Department of Agricultural Sciences of the institution.

The professionals at the event emphasized the need for a paradigm shift from traditional to modern livestock production methods to properly harness its potential for the development of the country.

Prof. Olaniyi Jacob-Babayemi, President of NSAP, said that animal agriculture plays a critical role in the nation’s efforts to achieve food security, wealth creation, and economic growth.

The President of the society explained that the world is changing rapidly, and the livestock production sector must adapt to the changes to remain relevant.

“We must explore new technologies, new business models, and new partnerships to drive growth through livestock,” he added.

The President added that almost every household in the country is involved in livestock production.

He advised practitioners to adopt modern techniques and engage in large-scale production to create wealth.

Also speaking, Mustapha Popoola, who is a guest Speaker at the event, lauded President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government for transforming the livestock sector.

He explained that the creation of the Ministry of Livestock Development was a milestone that changed the story of animal production for good.

He further said that the livestock sector is projected to be capable of contributing over N1 trillion dollars to the economic development of the country annually.

Prof. Shehu Abdul-Rahman, Vice-Chacellor (VC) of the Federal University of Lafia, appreciated the association for holding the conference at his institution.

The VC further said that the conference was apt and expressed optimism that discussions would help in the efforts of the government towards ensuring food security and wealth creation.

On his part, Lawrence Ayih 11, Abaga Toni of Toni Kingdom, Chairman of the occasion, said that the conference would enable professionals to share experiences and ideas to enhance livestock production in the country.(www.krestnews.com).

He added that they practitioners should adopt modern techinques because the importance of livestock in human development cannot be overemphasized due to its nutritional value.

He also called on the government to address the security challenges, especially in the rural areas, to enable farmers to go to farm without fear of attack. (NAN).
