Krestnews reports that protest has erupted in Dangote Sugar Refinery in Tunga, Awe Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
A viral video of the protesters shows that they employees of the Dangote Sugar Refinery are visibly not happy to what they alleged neglect and non-payment of their salaries for upward of more than 8 months.
The viral video which has been circulating on various social Media platforms shows the protesting workers carrying placards with various inscription and writings indicating how they feel regarding the alleged non-payment of their salaries and their poor working conditions.
Expressing the anguish felt by the workforce, one employee, speaking on condition of anonymity, lamented their predicament, stating, “We are employed but have been kept idle for months, with no salaries forthcoming. We are suffering here; we want Dangote to hear us. We have not received payment for six months and nine weeks.”
There however rising concerns that is emerging from sources within the company in Tunga of the absence of sugar-related activities despite the continuous influx of trailer trucks entering and exiting the facility.
It’s been alleged that the many trucks going in and out of the premises are likely engaged in other activities other than sugar refinery which is reason for the establishment of the company in the first place.
Fear is being expressed that the company may have jettisoned the Sugar refinery and engaged in mining activities instead.
The protesting workers are calling on the management of Dangote Sugar Refinery to as a matter of urgency disengage the director overseeing the company currently.
While calling for the immediate payment of their entitlements which they said has been long over due as well as take action on the Director whom the alleged is responsible for their plight.
“We will not engage in any dialogue with the current director due to a lack of trust. He should be relieved of his duties,” remarked one protester.
Another demonstrator cautioned the company not to underestimate the gravity of their protest, warning that if left unaddressed, the situation could escalate to resemble the crimes witnessed in other northern states.
However,as tension continues to mount, expectations are that the company will take urgent steps to address the issue before it degenerates into a security challenge in the area.
