The Benue State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to enhance key sectors, including health, nutrition, education, and social protection.

The signing ceremony took place on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at the Benue State Government House, Makurdi. The agreement focuses on improving maternal and child health by ensuring 70% healthcare coverage, strengthening malnutrition prevention, supporting exclusive breastfeeding, and providing essential medicines. It also aims to implement birth registration initiatives and strengthen community structures to support vulnerable children and families.

Other priority areas in the MoU include Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH), with plans to upgrade local government WASH units for better sanitation services, and Education, through enhanced teacher training, improved foundational learning, and increased access to education, particularly in rural areas.

Speaking at the event, Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia, represented by his deputy, Barrister Sam Ode, expressed excitement over the partnership, stating that his administration is committed to improving the lives of the people of Benue. He emphasized that working with UNICEF would help achieve these development goals more effectively.

Welcoming the delegation, the Secretary to the State Government, Deaconess Serumun Aber, praised UNICEF for choosing to collaborate with Benue State, particularly in uplifting vulnerable women and children.

The Director General of Budget and Planning, Dr. Jerome Andohol, also appreciated UNICEF’s support in developing the Benue State Development Plan. He highlighted that their assistance in social protection policies would attract funding and ensure that Benue remains a leader in tackling malnutrition. He expressed optimism for continued collaboration to drive the state’s progress.

Earlier, UNICEF’s team lead, Mrs. Juliet Chiluwe, commended the Benue State Government for its dedication to child welfare and development. She reaffirmed UNICEF’s commitment to supporting the state in implementing the 2025-2027 Workplan to improve the well-being of children and women.
