Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) has expressed gratitude to the President Bola Tinubu-led administration for championing the actualization of the financial autonomy to the 774 Local Government Councils in the country.
The association stated this is a communique read by its National President, Aminu Muazu-Maifata after their National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Saturday in Lafia, Nasararawa State capital.
The NEC comprising ALGON Chairmen of the 36 states and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja and national officials held its 48th NEC meeting in Lafia, Nasararawa State capital.
He appreciated the president, minister for Justice and Attorney-General, the national assembly, the judiciary other stakeholders for the landmark judgment aimed at strengthening the country’s democracy.
He also appreciated Civil Society Organisations, the media, traditional and religious leaders, and the people at the grassroots for their struggle to make the area councils a true third tier of government.
The National President of ALGON also commended their principals, the governors of the 36 states for accepting the outcome of the apex court.
He also called on all the 774 chairmen of area councils to be well-guided in terms of information to promote a harmonious relationship between the three tiers as well as the three Arms of Government in line with global best practices.
Muazu-Maifata said that the NEC had resolved that their members across the country would double their efforts towards delivering dividends of democracy in terms of projects and better welfare to the people at the grassroots.
He therefore said that the meeting had resolved that the council chairmen would not take support and confidence reposed on them for granted by intensifying efforts to offer more responsive and responsible leadership. (NAN).
