The Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) has advocated a four years unified tenure for elected Local Government (LG) officials in the country to ensure good governance.
Alhaji Aminu Muazu-Maifata, National President of ALGON said this in an interview with the newsmen on Monday in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
According to NAN report, the ALGON leader said the constitution needs to be amended to make the tenure of the office of LGA officials uniform across the country for smooth administration.
“The tenure of LGA officials should be made four years to enable us deliver on our campaign promises to the electorates,” he said.
He expressed worry that the tenure of the LG officials in some states is even one year or two years and wondered how they would deliver good governance within such a short period.
On the N62, 000 proposed minimum wage by the Federal Government, the ALGON boss appealed for an increase in the monthly allocations to the 774 LGAs in the country to enable them to pay the new amount when finally made a law.
Muazu-Maifata said the appeal for allocations increase became imperative because currently the 774 LGAs in the country get little above 18 per cent from the Federation Account monthly which is grossly inadequate to pay proposed wage.
Muazu-Maifata who is the council Chairman of Lafia Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, however lauded Gov. Abdullahi Sule for allowing area councils to enjoy autonomy in the state.
He called on other governors to emulate Nasarawa State and even on it for the overall development of the country.
He further explained that partial curfew was imposed in Lafia Local Government Area state as a proactive measure to tackle the increasing rate of kidnaping and other criminalities within the state capital.
“Motorcyclists were restricted from operating from 6:00pm to 6:00am, while tricycles were restricted from operating from 8:00pm to 6:00am.
“This is because security reports revealed that criminal gangs are using those two means of transportation and are operating between the hours we have restricted,” he added.
Muazu-Maifata further said that already the security situation in Lafia has improved and they would review the curfew as things keep improving.
He equally felicitated with Muslim faithful across the country on the 2024 Eid-el kabir celebration and urged them to live lives of selflessness and sacrifice.
He also urged Nigerians to pray for leaders at all levels for the grace to transform the country and work towards addressing the security and economy challenges confronting the nation.
