Several weeks after the grand finale of the prestigious 1X Cup football championship, excitement is yet to fade across the Lagos football community. Ikorodu City lifted the 2025 trophy in style at the iconic Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, clinching a giant cup and a mouth-watering N10 million prize.
Now in its third edition, the 1X Cup has cemented its place as the benchmark for grassroots football development in Lagos. Stakeholders, fans, and even small business owners continue to celebrate what many have described as the most vibrant and impactful edition yet.
For petty traders, hawkers, and food vendors, the championship has become an annual economic lifeline. Iya Kafila, a popular buka owner in Oshodi, recalled her initial disappointment when the semifinals were moved to Lagos Island. But she quickly expressed gratitude to the organisers for hosting earlier matches at the Inspire Sports Arena, Oshodi—where she and fellow traders enjoyed impressive sales throughout the tournament.
This year’s edition delivered riveting football, stunning statistics, and the emergence of young, talented players—many of whom have already caught the attention of local and international scouts.

Feelers from the grassroots football scene show that prize-winning teams and individual awardees have put their funds to good use, improving player welfare and strengthening their technical development.
Referees also benefitted immensely, staying fully engaged throughout the three-month festival of football.
Ikorodu City head coach, Wellington Egor, hailed the organisers for a near-flawless championship that offered invaluable exposure for his young squad. Highest goal scorer, Uche Emeribe of Vinmo Energy, also credited the tournament for boosting his confidence and preparing him for bigger opportunities.
Football enthusiasts across Lagos are now keeping a close eye on the rising stars of the 1X Cup, eager to see how far their talents will take them.

Still basking in the success of the tournament, Technical Committee member, Wale Joseph, expressed delight that the 1X Cup has become a cornerstone of football development in Lagos—fully aligned with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s T.H.E.M.E.S+ agenda.
