Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State has expressed deep sorrow over Tuesday’s fuel tanker explosion in Essa, Katcha Local Government Area, which claimed many lives and left several others injured.

In a statement issued in Minna by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, Governor Bago described the incident as “worrisome, unfortunate, and deeply pathetic.”

The Governor lamented the recurring trend of people rushing to scoop fuel from fallen tankers despite repeated warnings and public sensitisation on the dangers of such actions.

“This is yet another painful and tragic moment for our people and the government of Niger State,” Bago stated. “It is disheartening how some citizens still approach fallen tankers to collect spilled fuel, risking their lives in the process.”

The Governor, fondly referred to as the Farmer Governor, urged citizens to value their lives above material gain, emphasizing that no circumstance justifies such dangerous behavior.

Governor Bago commended the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) for its swift response to the tragedy and assured that the government would continue to support victims through relevant agencies.

He prayed for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives and for quick recovery of the injured.
