The Society for Family Health (SFH) says 27,000 women in Niger State have embraced the self injection method of birth control in the first quarter of 2024.

The Country Social & Behaviour Change Coordinator, Delivering Innovation in Self Care (DISC) project of Society for Family Health, Michael Titus stated this at the weekend in Minna.

In a report titled “Niger State FP/ DMPA – SC Performance: DISC Project Impact”, from July 2021 to March 2024, Titus explained that 2,000 women had embraced the method at the inception of the project in 2021 across 10 Local Government Areas of the State

“Self injection method number grew from 2,000 women at inception to 27, 000 at the end of the first quarter of 2024”, he said.

The DISC Project Coordinator explained that with empathetic counselling, the self injection rate in the state has significantly grown; the base line of 14 percent in 2021, peaked at 55% in the second quarter of 2023 and now at 51% at the first quarter of 2024.

“Over 300% growth in self injection rate in the state shows that 52 of every 100 women who opt DMPA- SC as their method of choice are self injecting successful under the supervision of the health provider “, he explained.

Titus said that DISC has reached out to 194, 000 Women of Reproductive Age (WRA) in the state using 81 public and private health facilities, adding that the project is currently operating in 15 states of the Federation having started in Lagos, Oyo and Niger in 202i.

Speaking with journalists at the presentation of the DISC report, the Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Primary Health Care Services, Alhaji Abdullahi Imam said government is committed to providing adequate basic primary health care services to the people

He said that government has been funding the procurement of required medical commodities in all it health facilities.
