The Programme Coordinator, Positive Care and Development (PCDF), Dr Esse Mwakanma has said 10,000 babies are born with clubfoot every year in Nigeria,

Nwakanma stated this Monday during media briefing to mark World Clubfoot Day celebration in Minna, the Niger State capital.

He explained that 200, 000 babies representing 1of every 800 births are born with Clubfoot every year globally.

He described clubfoot as the most common musculoskeletal birth defect and a major cause of preventable physical disability, adding that PCDF is in collaboration with the MiracleFeet global organisation solely dedicated to clubfoot treatment.

“In Nigeria it is estimated that more than 10,000 children are born with clubfoot each year. Positive Care and Development Foundation ( PCDF) collaborate with Miraclefeet to see that children with clubfoot can access this Care in their locality,” he said.

Nwakanma explained that in 2023, his organisation partnered with MiracleFeet to offer free clubfoot treatment to children in Niger and Kwara States available in eight selected hospitals.

“PCDF has currently enrolled and retained 142 clubfoot children in care across 8 facilities including Federal Medical Centre Bida and the IBB Specialist Hospital Minna”, he further explained.

While making a presentation, the Head Consultant of the Orthopedic Department, IBB Specialist Hospital Minna, Dr Osho Francis explained that the condition can easily be corrected when presented for treatment early in line preferably within 0 – 5 years old.

He explained that clubfoot can only be corrected at adulthood by surgery if the patient is over 12 years old or so.
